Natural Soy Candle

You have probably seen websites that say that their candles are 'triple-fragranced' or 'triple scented". Do not be misled. This term is loosely based on very old industry standards of using 1/2 ounce of fragrance oil to 1 pound of wax. The 'triple-scented' candles that you see are most likely made with 1 1/2 ounces of fragrance oil per 1 pound of wax.

While it may seem that 'more is better', when dealing with candles, this is not true. Candle waxes can only hold so much fragrance and soy wax is even more temperamental. Exceeding the limit of fragrance that a wax can hold can cause the fragrance oil to seep out of the wax, it can also actually inhibit the scent 'throw' of the candle.

Yes, believe it or not it is possible for a 'triple-scented' candle to smell weaker while burning than a candle using less fragrance oil of the same type per pound of wax.

You may or may not know soy wax burns much more completely than paraffin wax. You can burn your soy candles down until you have about 1/4 of an inch left of the candle.

Here is a tip on how to get the remaining wax out so that you can reuse the container for other purposes.

To completely clean your container, set in small sauce pan that is 1/2 full of water. Turn your stove top to low and bring the temperature up. You will see that all of your remaining wax will liquefy. Once it does pick up the jar with a potholder and pour the remaining soy candle wax out of the container and into the garbage. Wipe the remaining wax out with a paper towel. Now just was it with regular dish soap and warm water. After the container is dry, it's ready for a new purpose!
